Giuseppe Antonio Trono (1739-1810. Superb large format gouache and tempera study
A superb and incredibly detailed gouache and tempera study of a golden pheasant on unwatermarked paper measuring 43.2 x 33.8 cm.
Portugal, ca. 1790.
The gouache is signed by Giuseppe Troni, most famed for his career as a portrait painter of the royal family at the Portuguese Court between the years 1785 and 1810. At a certain point during his career in Portugal, he adopted the nickname Troni, which is the last name traditionally adopted by the scholars.
Exquisite detail. To be sold without mount. Light even age toning, a little dusty.
With thanks for the biographical detail provided by Michela Degortes, co-author of the paper "Giuseppe Antonio Trono e Bernardino Gagliardini, pintores de retrato no reinado de Maria I. Novos dados de investigação". Artis On (7/2018): 209-223.
Provenance: Private Swiss Collection.
